One Year Stats

One year...one WHOLE year!

Here's what the stats have to say about our Monster

Height: 32" (Mama was bang on that one!)
Weight: 24lbs10z (we definitely thought he was 27+lbs!)
Head Circumference: 18.8" (big noggin!)

The doctor (who's name I totally didn't catch, but she was nice enough!) was great. We talked about feeding (apparently at this age, they start to eat less...I just nodded and smiled, cause seriously, the kid is tank and eats EVERYTHING!), switching to milk, weening from bottles, eczema (Owen has a bit on his upper arms and cheeks) and a few other private issues.

He's doing perfectly! He has hit all of his milestones and is incredibly close to walking! Today we were practicing standing unassisted and he totally got it!

His favourite toys right now are his Ride-On Car from Auntie T, remotes, blackberries, tupperware, and spoons. The kid will go CRAZY with a spoon in each hand, rocking back and forth and bouncing on the floor. It's pretty hilarious!

Favourite foods...well...everthing! I'm a little sad to stop making baby food, but it's really exciting that he's going to be joining us for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'll still make things like applesauce (his fave!) and bread from scratch (he's going to get french toast for the first time tomorrow!! Woohoo!!) and maybe meatballs because I'm addicted to them as much as he is! He LOVES meats and veggies, tolerates fruit, and is down with pasta (rotini is his favourite....with Mama's homemade sauce!)

His routines are fantastic. He hasn't done away with his 11am or 3pm nap, and typically naps for 1.5-2hrs. Give me LOTS of time to work on orders for Sweet Stella's, promote, list things on Etsy and just all together have some time for me.

And he's still sleeping a solid 8pm-9am! I couldn't be happier about that. I have some Mama friends who's kiddos get up at either 5am or at multiple points in the night, and I think that would spell some very bad things for my PPD (another post, another day)

Happy Birthday, Owen!

This boy sure loves his cake!

Owen and his pal E at the splash pad! The boy are only 3 days apart, so his wonderful Mama, P, and I celebrated with her friend A...and cupcakes at the splashpad downtown!

He hated every minute of this! Crawled to me crying and climbing up for a snuggle

Dear Owen

Dear Owen;

Today, my Monster, you turn 1 years old.

You've accomplished some really amazing things in the past year, and we are the luckiest parents in the world...because you're ours, and we're yours.

At first, We weren't sure what to think of you, your fat lip, your silly smile, and your big greeny blue eyes. We quickly became attached to them, and your stole our hearts with every giggle, oooh and grunt.

In the first six months, you mastered the art of rolling over, playing with your toys, responding to your name and once you had a taste of real honest-to-goodness food, there was no turning back. You positively hated apricots (even though it was funny for us to give them to you), but absolutely LOVED everything else that Mama made for you (which I loved making for you and am sad to be saying goodbye to big batches of baby food...but excited for you to eat meals with us and explore a whole new world!)

Your milestones were great and wonderful, from your first crawl while Mama was on a conference call and silently jumped up and down, to how you now scale the full set of stairs and dance and sing.

We did have some scary moments though...like when you choked on your medicine, all of those nasty shots that Nurse Pam gave you at your checkups, and recently when you've tried to go down the stairs head first (boys have no fear).

My sweet sweet boy...

Our favourite moments with you are bathtime when you splash and play with your airplanes. You love to line them up on the side of the tub, stand and throw them overboard, saying "Uh oh!" and looking at us to throw them back in. We play peek-a-boo when you're all wrapped up in your duck towel, then Daddy dries you off and gives you a good snuggle.

You absolutely hate to be strapped down these days, you want to go go go! You want to crawl and explore, to get into your boxes of toys and blocks, to make towers and knock them over and to dance and sing. To stand at the patio door, and work your way around to the windows, breakfast bar and find me in the kitchen.

You're such a funny little guy. You like to shake your booty when we say "Can you dance, dance, dance?" and you sing with Mama in the car. It makes your mommy so incredibly happy that you love to dance and sing, and that you love to paint!

I'll tell you a secret, my Owen. Sometimes when I am rocking you for a nap, I do it for me, and not for you. I close my eyes, listening to the Beatles music, thinking about your Poppa, and then I look down at you...fast asleep and my heart absolutely melts. He would have loved you so very much, Owen. So so much...

Our lives have changed, and definitely for the better. While we look forward to the few hours of quiet when you go down for the night, I get excited about what we're going to do the next day. Whether it's walking with our friends P and Eliot, or it's just staying home and playing all day. Each day is full of something new for you, and it's amazing to watch.

Happy Birthday, my dear boy. We love you so incredibly much.

Thank you for choosing us.

It's Birthday Week!

Man...it's Tuesday already?!

Ok! So! This week is the birthday...the party and I'm stressing like whoa.

I know I know...it'll all go great, he won't remember it, blah blah blah. The thing is, party planning is kinda my thing. It's gotta be perfect.

It's kind of like planning a small wedding, minus the seating chart and centrepieces.

Last night, like the crazy obsessive Mama that I am, I was up until midnight making a rather large to-do list of everything that still needs to get done this week for the party, as well as our photo shoot on Thursday.

Obviously, there's cleaning and grocery shopping, but there was also a box of incredibly cute props to put together for our photo shoot, and decorations to finish up.

I am THRILLED that the decorations, as of about 11:30pm are finished.

The favour bags are done, the Birthday Wishes Box looks great.

The menu is planned, and C is taking Friday off so we can get the kiddie pool and water table all set up, the patio chairs and table cleaned, make the sliders (oh yes...homemade sliders!) and slice the watermelon.

The weather outlook is pretty awesome...

Now...I just need to have a glass of wine lined up for 1:00pm, and we'll be all set!

Y3W: Favour Bags Complete!

Woohoo!!

While Owen absolutely rocked a 2hr nap this afternoon (thank God! I discovered his bottom left tooth, beside his front tooth, tonight during bathtime...when he bit me. Such a funny little boy, but it explains for his crankiness over the past few days!)...Mama put together all of the favours for his birthday party!

The very organized chaos prior to Owen's nap (see the little legs in the top corner?)

Fun rainbow lollipops!

Favours for the kiddos! Bubbles, gooey fish in favour pouches, sour Tongue Tingler Bombs...

Disney Character Bandz and rainbow suckers! Tied with a Hot Diggity tag and embellished with a mini pinwheel from Twirlie Whirlies!

Now...I wanted to do something fun for the adults, since there are only 11 kiddos coming to the party but about 45 adults (at the moment...there might be more!) coming.

So...the adults will get...

Rainbow lollipops, gooey fish and sour Tongue Tingler Bombs for our single friends, tied with a Hot Diggity tag and Twirlie Whirlie pinwheel

Double the candy for the parents and our couple friends and family coming to the party! Embellished with an extra rainbow lollipop

I had such a blast putting all of these together (all 36 of 'em!), and I'm starting to get more and more excited about his party and about his turning one.

Tonight, when I came home from a meeting with my Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope team, C and Owen were playing upstairs. He gets so excited when Mama or Daddy come home, it's like he hasn't seen us in FOREVER!

Well...he took steps to me! Real honest to goodness STEPS...albeit holding Daddy's fingers, but he was walking/jumping (he was VERY excited) and C was sitting on the floor..not moving behind Owen at all.

Not long now...not long my baby boy!

Questions Questions

The lovely Censie over at Building Our Story tagged me in this, so I have to do my duty and answer...then tag 8 of you mama bloggers!

Do you think you're hot?

Absolutely not! I've come to appreciate my body, and am very proud of what I've achieved in my *almost* 12months postpartum, but I wouldn't consider myself "hot". I have my moments where I feel like a Yummy Mummy, though!

Upload a picture of the wallpaper you're using right now

Complete and utter cuteness :)

When was the last time you ate chicken?

To be honest, I dont even know. A couple of days ago maybe? I'm having some tonight, I know that...

What were you thinking while doing this?

When was the last time I ate chicken!?

Do you have nicknames? What are they?

Shan, Shanny-poo, Moosh, Honey/Dear (from C), Shans/Shanny (from my Mama), Beans (from my Dad), Scooter, Shananegins

Y3W: Party Sneak Peeks!

We've had quite the busy week of playdates in Stratford, swinging on the swings. Meetings with Ovarian Walk coordinators and conference calls. Shopping for new clothes for Mama (size 9!!! WOOT!!! and XS shirts! Yahoo!) and cute shorts for Monster.

My brain is a wee (read: lot) fried at the moment, so here's a sneak peek at Owen's bday plans!

Look like fun, huh??

Tonight, once we're all finished cleaning up the yard (our grass has gone to seed! It's been so wet here, and we have poor drainage, that we couldn't cut it for the past two weeks!!), I'm going to work on a special Wish Box for Owen.

I got the idea from my favourite Tampa Mama (now in Tallahasse...bah). It's basically a box, decorated or not, monogramed or not (Owen's will be decorated, with his name on it somewhere) that people can write wishes on pieces of paper and put them in the box. The box will be given to him when he *gasp* moves out of the house for college so that he can remember all of the people who were there celebrating with him on his friend birthday, all of the people who love him to pieces, and all of the special moments and wishes that they have for him.

I think it's a great idea, and I can't wait to create it for him...then hide it away in our closet and deny that he's getting older and...*gasp* cry when I have to give it to him when he's 17 and off to college.

2 Weeks Today

Owen is going to be 1 year old in two weeks today.

WOW!

I got an email from What To Expect the other day...all about what to pack in your diaper bag and advising to have it ready and in the car for that all important trip to the hospital.

While part of my thought "Uhm...pretty sure I already did that, and I have the scars to prove it!" another part of me thought "Holy moly, that really was a year ago!"

So much has changed, even within the past couple of weeks! Owen is standing all. of. the. time. now, and wants nothing more than to make music. Yes yes, he's my little musician! Yesterday, we were in Stratford with my playgroup and we went to Family and Company, a fantastic toy store with a tonne of unique goodies. All 5 of the kids were sleeping on our walk there, but as soon as we walked into the store, they all sprang to life.

I showed Owen this crazy wrist band thing, that had 4 jingle bells on it. BIG MISTAKE! I couldn't get them away from him! He was SO incredibly happy, shaking his bells and making...music!

So...I decided to do what every one of you parents are probably going to think "She is certifiably INSANE!" for. I bought him a drum.

He's just like his grandpa. He LOVES music, loves to dance and loves to sing. Definitely Mama's boy in all of those categories, so I wanted to get him his first musical instrument for his very first birthday.

Poppa would be proud.
