Still On The Search...

Well, my mission at Wal-mart was not successful last night in terms of finding a pregnancy pillow. However, I did find some great Christmas gifts and loaded up on healthy snacks for my desk at work!

I managed to get some decent sleep last night with one pillow behind my back and one in front of my tummy, though I did wake up one or twice throughout the night. Not too shabby, but definitely looking forward to getting some quality sleep this evening and maybe, just maybe C will let me sleep in a little tomorrow!

Today is a very special day for us; We close on our new house and should be getting the keys this afternoon! However, it does mean that this weekend we will be spending a lot of time moving boxes from C's parents basement to the new house, unpacking and....if I get my way...decorating for Christmas!

I'll post some pictures once we get in there, but we are very excited about this house as it is the one that we will be raising our family in. We can't wait to get in and settled, and focus on decorating the nursery!

Welcome home, Szem family, welcome home!

Exhaustion

Sleep...to those of you who have been pregnant you will know what this blog entry is about. To those of you who are able to enjoy 7 or even 8 hours of precious, uninterrupted sleep...I envy you this morning.

For the past few weeks, I have been waking up every day at about 3am or 4am, only to toss and turn for 2 or 3 hours. Eventually, I fall back to sleep and within about 40 minutes, the angry alarm is going off beside my head. I definitely feel like Cinderella when the bell chimes - "Oh that clock! Killjoy! Get up, Get up I say!"

Killjoy - certainly! At this point, I am just exhausted. I know that it means that the pregnancy is going well, and I am very thankful for that as the little symptoms are keeping me sane and calm, but holy heck I want to sleep through the night.

Last night, I even tried sleeping with a pillow in between my legs. The only issue with that, is that I don't usually sleep that way and it felt odd to me, therefore couldn't fall asleep.

So this evening after work, I am going on a mission. I am going to find a pregnancy pillow if it is the last thing that I can accomplish with my day. I may even get some new headphones for my iPod so that I can listen to some relaxing music that will put me to sleep. Anything that will help at this point, I am willing to try!

On my mission tonight, I hope to find this:

How heavenly must sleep be....elusive, sweet sleep...

Integrated Prenatal Screening

Today marked a milestone for the Family Szem - we got to see Bug again and this time...it looks like a real baby!

The baby measured at 11weeks4days today (5cm), which puts us just two days ahead of schedule. It was truly amazing to see the arms and legs, fists and feet, and even a little button nose. In the picture that we got today, it even looks like Bug might be sucking their thumb!

At one point, the technician pressed a little harder than I would have liked with the ultrasound wand, but it woke Bug up and he/she started moving all over the place - flailing its arms and legs, rolling over to try and get comfy and go back to sleep.

Absolutely amazing. We're keeping our fingers crossed that everything looks good to the doctor's and that my blood work was all right, and we go back in about 5 weeks for another round of blood work to complete the IPS Screening for Downs and Spina Bifida.

Today when we saw the baby, I immediately felt "It's a boy!" - which is a very different feeling than what I've had recently. Both C and I were confident that it was a girl last week, however...it definitely feels boy today! Either way, Bug is strong and is growing rapidly!

Here's the latest photo shoot!

Gifts from GodMama!

Bug's very thoughtful Fairy GodMother gave us a gift on Saturday afternoon when we were down for the Santa Claus Parade.

It's absolutely beautiful, and is sure to keep Bug warm in the car seat on those blustery days!

The little bows are fastened to Velcro straps that link onto the car seat. How clever!
The overall pattern is of cute and cuddly safari animals!
Goes perfectly with the other elephants (Hurley, Franklin and "Wrong Elephant"/Winks) that we have for the nursery!

Christmas Cheer

This weekend was an absolute blast - full of good friends, great food, and the Santa Claus parade back home.

It was such a joy to be able to share our news with someone very important to me - Bug's GodMama's son. He's been a big part of my life since he was born, and I definitely consider him family.

I told him that I had a secret to tell him, so he came very close so I could whisper in his ear "We're having a baby." His eyes got really big and bright, and then he started screaming. He jumped up, and was running circles around the living room and kitchen, yelling "They're having a baby!!" Now, that's what I call a positive reaction!

Then we met up with our friends T, R and their cute-as-a-button daughter O for dinner. After dinner, we were off to the Santa Claus parade and, much to my delight, GodMama's parents joined us! Her parents have always been Momma Jo and Dad to me, so being able to see them was absolutely fantastic! Telling them that they're going to be GrandParents again was a great feeling and they are both very excited.

It feels really good to tell our family and friends, co-workers and anyone else willing to listen about our happy news. We feel truly blessed, and can't wait for things to develop.

Onto week 12, which means that by mid-week Bug will be about the size of a large plum. It will develop reflexes this week - which will be important for it's future as a goalie or drummer like their Poppa. Bug's face looks undeniably human now, and will start responding to Mommy and Daddy's voice and touch this week!

Half Done Week 11

It's still rather difficult to believe, but by the end of this week Bug will be big enough to hold in the palm of your hand - about the size of a lime.

To put that into perspective, when we found out on October 4th that we were in fact pregnancy, the baby at that point was no larger than a poppy seed. From a poppy seed to a lime, in just 6 short weeks...wow.

I have definitely entered that "I feel fat" phase. I keep looking in the mirror in the morning, trying to see if there have been changes and if my bump is starting to show, but I just keep thinking "Wow, I just look fat!" There are some rather defined stretch marks across my abdomen, which I will wear with pride, but other than that...I just look...thicker.

On the other hand, when I try to suck my stomach in, it definitely doesn't go anywhere. My abdomen has always been a bit...."ponchy" but now it's getting tight and hard which makes me wonder if my uterus is making it's way past my pelvic done at this point.

All of these changes are so new, and happening so fast - it's a little overwhelming. But, I can't turn back now. Each new step is getting us closer and closer to meeting this little one, and welcoming them into our family with open arms, and very big hearts. Only 6 months to go!

Worries

Yesterday on our way home from Ingersoll , C asked me "So, what are you worried about in terms of parenting? D asked me that the other day after I told him about the baby, and I was wondering what your thoughts were." It prompted a very good discussion.

Being a kid who was consistently teased for being over weight, and not overly pretty, immediately I started thinking "Oh I hope that they have friends in school who are nice to them!" We talked about being picked last for dodge ball, the worry that our kids won't fit in and that we won't know when we drop them off for their first day of Kindergarten if their teacher will be attentive enough...or maybe too attentive.

Quickly, the discussion turned into "What if they make the wrong choices?" and worries of drugs at an early age, rebellious behaviour and things of the sort. Basically, all of those things that you can't control once they are thinking and acting for themselves.

Then there are those nights when you don't know what the baby wants or needs, how to make them feel better when they're sick, or how to get them to stop crying in the middle of the night (which we know is inevitable). What about when they get hurt, or worse?

I think one of my main worries right now is, will I be able to accurately teach this little one about their Poppa? Will I be able to account for how wonderful he was and how much he would have loved spoiling them rotten? It breaks my heart that they won't have any memories with their Poppa, any recollection of who he was and all of the things that he accomplished and how much he loved his family.

I want this little precious baby to know every step of the way how much their Poppa loves them, and how he is with them in everything that they do. I want them to know how hilarious he was, and how much he loved their Grandma. I want them to know that he played the drums and was a goalie, and that he taught me to dream as big as a mountain. I want them to know how strong he was and how much their Mommy misses him every day. I want them to know that he loves them.
